This winter's Afternoon Salons examine transitions: in the development of the Renaissance style from medieval traditions, in the subtle differences in the depiction of the Buddha, and in the evolution of the landscape.

Discuss the evolution in the representation of the Buddha by examining works from ancient Ghandara (modern-day Pakistan), India and Thailand. Start in ancient Ghandara with Siddhartha Meditating below the Jambu Tree, 3rd century, then move to India for Buddha Shakyamuni, c. 550, and end with Meditating Buddha Protected by a Three-Headed Serpent Deity, 10th century, from Thailand.
